Our team of developers are constantly honing their skills so that we can provide a diverse offering of frameworks to clients based on their website and marketing requirements. From our experience, Kentico and Umbraco are perhaps the two most popular .NET CMS platforms currently, consistently gaining traction as the preferred option for newly built websites.

There are many in-depth insights into both Kentico and Umbraco available online, but it could be hard to compare the benefits of both. We’ve compiled a side by side comparison of the two CMS platforms so you can easily evaluate their features and determine which one is best suited for your marketing needs.

So, without further ado, let the battle commence:

Content management

The ability to efficiently manage content is one of the most important features any marketer looks for in a CMS. We already talked to you in detail about why Kentico is every marketer’s perfect partner, but how does it fare compared to Umbraco?

Both platforms are fairly customisable when it comes to content management: Kentico is very flexible with its fields, document types and the separation between content and design; similarly, Umbraco could either be used in its standard form or customised to your requirements, thus providing access to a myriad of content types, categories and levels.

Content editing

It’s all well and good being able to customise your content management, but when it comes to editing, how easy is it to make changes to what your website visitors see? Umbraco’s approach to content editing is having a Microsoft Word style editor which can be integrated with your desktop Word and enable you to generate and tweak content even in offline mode.

Kentico, on the other hand, works on a dashboard principle, allowing you to manage the structure and modules of your site. It also features a built-in WYSIWYG editor similar to Word which offers advanced linking, formatting and media insertion capabilities.

Ecommerce

For those of you selling products online, both CMS platforms offer e-commerce options. The Kentico module dedicated to internet sales enables you to create an online shop though which you can sell products, as well as integrate authorisation features such as PayPal through which you can provide credit and loyalty rewards for your customers.

Similarly, Umbraco has a number of built-in open source ecommerce modules and apps you can choose from, amongst which the commercially renowned Ucommerce and the open source module Tea Commerce.

SEO

Marketers can also boost their website’s SEO with these two CMS options. Umbraco allows users full control over all the SEO components of a page, from page titles to the URL, so you will be able to create SEO-friendly web pages without any hassle. Alternatively, Kentico features a number functionalities designed to help improve your SEO, including enabling you to create custom and SEO-friendly URLs, as well as access other SEO settings such as 301 redirects and Google Sitemap.

Multi-language

Another feature we discussed when we reviewing Kentico is the CMS’s multi-language capabilities – the platform supports multiple languages both for visitors and users logging into the editing interface, meaning international staff members can access the CMS with ease. Umbraco is also available in a number of languages (15 to be precise), allowing you to include additional ones if need be.

When it comes down to marketing functionalities, both Umbraco and Kentico have their pros and cons, and are designed to cater to different CMS needs.
