Cardiff Children's Literature Festival

Calling all book worms...

The Client

Now in its sixth year, the Cardiff Children’s Literature Festival is an award-winning festival that creates a lifelong love of reading in children aged 3 – 11 years, with some events aimed at adults. The festival continues to create lifelong readers whilst entertaining and enthusing them about reading. With a range of events over a two-week period, attendees can enjoy book readings, craft activities, writing workshops quizzes and games. The festival is produced by the City of Cardiff Council, Literature Wales, Cardiff University and National Museum Wales.

The Brief

In previous years the festival was hosted as a subpage on the Visit Cardiff website. To raise awareness of the festival and to build the festival’s brand identity, Cardiff Council were looking for a dedicated website to host all the event details and content.

The main task for Spindogs was to incorporate the illustrations and branding from the client’s existing annual printed booklet, highlighting the character of the festival whilst also ensuring that all of the necessary information was included and that the artwork for the books was showcased appropriately.

The Solution

We built an events directory to house all of the unique events and workshops hosted during the festival. This directory gave the client the flexibility to control several fields such as age range, language, price and venue.

The website was also built bilingually as some events are offered in both English and Welsh.

We also used a technology called React to handle the page loading and, in particular, the searches. This meant that the search bar in the header of the site and on the event could load without clicking on a submit button, cutting down on loading time.

As the festival’s new brochure and marketing materials had to launch at a specific time, we worked to a tight deadline to ensure that all the collateral aligned.
